Making swimming accessible to all.
Ako Wai is a community-driven programme seeking to educate people about swimming and water safety in a fun and inclusive environment.
Ako Wai was initially set up by Stratford locals Lizette Bretherton, Aimee Woodhead, and Sam Mako in 2019. Local businesses, in particular Lizette (McDonald Real Estate) and Aimee (Flyers Swim School), donated to the fund, and 20-students were supported in the first year of operation. The entity now has charitable status and has been formalised into Ako Wai Charitable Trust Taranaki Inc enabling us to extend our purpose and scope.

“Learning to swim is one of the most important skills that any child can achieve in life.
Ako Wai is an amazing initiative that will encourage all children, regardless of their situation, to learn water safety and basic swimming skills. I am a huge supporter of this initiative and give it my full endorsement. I am hopeful that this concept will spread to all regions of New Zealand”
